24 ~  Court convenes; Commissioners present: Francis Jenckins, Samuel Hopkins, Thomas Jones, Edmund Howard, Capt. John King.

 

George Layfield, Pltf. vs. William Laws, deft. for 500 lbs/tbco due estate of Col. William Stevens, for which Layfield’s wife Ann, widow of Stevens, is executrix; Peter Dent, attorney for Layfield, cites payments by Stevens on behalf of Laws for 400 lbs to Capt. Marshall and 100 lbs to James Obratton in 1685; Samuel Worthington, for Laws, denies debt, presents bill from Laws to Stevens for white oak planks sawed and delivered to Stevens in 1685, also a receipt signed by Stephen Horsey for 300 feet of oak plank sawed by Laws for Stevens; Court rules non-suit.

 

25 ~  Peter Bodkin, pltf. vs. William Lawrence, deft. for 256 lbs/pork; Peter Dent, attorney for Bodkin, presents account toaling 589 lbs for various liquors delivered to Lawrence in 1687; balance due of 256 lbs; Samuel Worthington, attorney for Lawrence, denies charges; Court rules for Bodkin.

 

26 ~  William Beck of New Kent County, Virginia, Pltf. vs. John Harris, Deft. for 6000 lbs/tbco due as penalty for assisisting a runaway servant, per Act of Assembly passed 10 May 1692; Peter Dent, attorney for Beck, claims that Harris assisted a negro slave of Beck’s on 10 Sept 1692 at Manokin; Samuel Worthington, for Harris, denies claim; Jury called; Richard Chambers (foreman), William Planner, Sen., John McKnitt, Robert Smith, William Law, William Alexander, William Curre, Francis Joyce, Richard Holland, William Lawrence, John Mcbride, George Banam; Jury finds for Harris; Andrew Whittington, innholder, asssumes cost of suit.

 

27 ~  William Beck of New Kent County, VA, power of attorney dated 21 November 1692; appoints Andrew Whittington and James Beauchamp (Beauchanan) his attorneys in matters brought before the court; witnesses: Stephen Luffe, Charles Ballard.

 

27 ~  Stephen Costin, William Warwick, Abraham Trice request payment for 5 days attendance at Court, case of William Beck vs. John Harris.
