such by-laws and ordinances, not contrary to law,
as they may deem expedient for the comfort,
health, convenience and prosperity of the town
and its inhabitants, for the prevention or removal
of nuisances, preservation of health and suppression
of vice and immorality within the town.

Footways.

Sec. 11. They may, by ordinance, direct all or
any of the footways in said town to be laid out,
levelled, mended and repaired, with materials they
may think best, at the expense of the proprietors
of the different lots before which such levelling
and paving shall be done.

Tax on dogs.

Sec. 12. They may levy a tax on all dogs kept
within the town and may collect the same as oth-
er taxes.

Treasurer —
his bond, &c.

See. 13. The Burgess shall be Treasurer of the
corporation, and shall give bond to the corpora-
tion, with security to be approved by the Commis-
sioners or a majority of them, in such penalty as
they shall prescribe, conditioned for the faithful
discharge of his duty as Treasurer, and he shall
receive and pay away all monies that he shall be
directed to receive and pay away by the ordinances
of the Commissioners.

Elections.

Sec. 14. All elections shall be held and conduc-
ted as shall from time to time be directed by the
by-laws of the corporation, not inconsistent with
this charter.

Burgess and
other officers
required to
take oath.

Sec. 15. The Burgess shall qualify as directed
by section six of Article sixty-eight of the Code;
the Commissioners and all other officers of said
corporation, before entering upon the duties of
their respective offices, shall, before the Burgess,

take and subscribe the following oath: "I do
solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the
office of ———— to the best of my knowledge and
ability, without favor, affection or partiality so
help me God."

Meetings of
Burgess and
Commissioners

point Clerk.

Sec. 16. The Burgess and Commissioners of said
town may meet as often as occasion may require,
upon the business of the corporation, at which
meetings the Burgess shall preside ; they may ap-
point a Clerk and assign his duties, and allow him
such compensation for his services as they may
