LAWS OF MARYLAND.

receive and admit into the said Asylum such other
idiotic and "insane persons of this State riot convic-
ted as above, in the character of private "patients
at such sum not less than one hundred and 'twenty-
five dollars as they may agree upon, one half of
which shall be paid in advance, and the future
payments to be secured to the satisfaction of said
President and Directors, and they shall have pow-
er to remove, or cause to be removed, any patient
or person so admitted, whenever they may deem it

necessary and prudent so to do; provided, that
such patients or persons shall not be admitted or
retained to the exclusion of persons convicted as
provided in the preceding section of this act.

Roads not to
be laid out.

Sec. 6. Be it enacted, That no road, lane, or
other avenue, shall be laid out, condemned or
opened through the grounds of said Insane Asylum,
without the consent of the said President and Di-
rectors, and then such road, lane, or avenue shall
not approach within one hundred and fifty yards
of any part of said building or buildings except
such roads and lanes or avenues as may be required
for the use of said Asylum, nor shall the said Presi-
dent and Directors sell, barter, or alienate any of
the lands of such Asylum so as to lessen the tilla-
ble or productive quantity of acres so belonging to
said Asylum.

quests.

Sec. 7. Be it enacted, That said President and
Directors be and they are hereby authorized to
accept, receive and hold in the name of the State
of Maryland, for the use and benefit of said Insane
Asylum any donation, gift, or bequest of real or
personal property, money or stocks, that may be
donated or bequeathed to them as above, and the
same to appropriate and apply in such manner as
they shall deem best for the interest of said Asylum
and the State.

To take oath.

Sec. 8. Be it enacted, That said President and
Directors, and the Surgeons, Physicians, Apothe-
caries, and Superintendents by them appointed,
shall before entering on the duties of such appoint-
ment or office take and subscribe the following oath
before some person authorized to administer oaths :
I do solemnly swear (or affirm, as the case may be)
that have not borne arms against the United States,
nor given any aid, countenance, sympathy or sup-
