REV, LAWRENCE JAMES VALENTINE
On February 18. 1928. the life of the Rev. Lawrence James
Valentine came to a close. Those who were privileged to know
this great and good man during his eighty-seven years of life,
shared with his family the suddened sense of a personal and ir-
reparable loss while at the same time rejoicing in the thought
that the far-reaching influence of Rev. Valentine, as a true minis-
ter of the gospel has made the world a much better place in
which to live.
An outstanding chararacteristic of this far seeing man. was his
love of the beautiful things of life and the full life he lived
was crowded with efforts which resulted in pood that will bring
pleasure and benefit to a great many people through years to
come.
He has had charge of many pastorates in the Methodist Epis-
copal Church, two being in Baltimore, St. Paul and Centennial.
He was also at tine lime Presiding Elder of the Alexandria, now
Richmond, District. Always truly giving of himself, he felt it
not only duty, but a privilege to be of help to his fellow man
Gentle, courteous, kind, considerate and above all modest of
self, he fulfilled his sense of obligation to God even regardless
of financial gain for himself.
He was twice married, having survived the whole of his first
family, excepting grandchildren. His radiant personality and
his spirit of making others happy, inspired in every person, young
and old, man or woman, high or low, a mingled reverence and
affection that made them feel their loss of a true friend.
The passing of Rev. Valentine was closely followed by that of
one of his sons, Lawrence James, Jr.. on March 23, 1928. but his
widow, Mrs. Phenola Singleton Valentine, and nine children sur-
vive.
The oldest son. Singleton Valentine, is married and is a
teacher in the city schools of Baltimore. The other children
are Thaddeus, Harry, Marjorie, Amy. Phenola. Alvin, Wilbur
