REV. S. M. JOHNSON, D. D.

Rev. S. M. Johnson, D. D, one of Baltimore's leading and most
progressive pastors, was born in Burkittsville, Frederick County, Md.,
in 1857. He joined the church of his choice when he was fifteen
years old. He attended the public- schools at his birthplace. He en-
tered Howard University, Washington, D. C., and graduated from the
preparatory and theological departments at a young age, and was
licensed to preach by Rev. John R. Heney. He entered the Baltimore
Conference of the A. M. E. Church in Washington, D. C., in 1879.
For 25 years he served in the State of his nativity acceptably and
very successfully. He was then transferred to the Virginia Con-
ference of the same church by Bishop B. F. Lee and appointed pre-
siding elder of the Portsmouth District. As presiding elder he was
a wonderful success. Morris Brown College, Atlanta, Ga., conferred
the degree of Doctor of Divinity upon him in 1904. He is now pastor
of Trinity A. M. E. Church, Baltimore, Md.
