proved; provided that no street above mentioned nor any other
street in the said town, shall be paved and improved in accord-
ance with the terms of this Act, until a sewer of proper size
shall be laid under the same to connect with the other sewers
of the said town, or to be given other proper outlet, and the
said commission is hereby authorized, empowered and directed,
out of the moneys borrowed under the terms of this Act, or
raised by assessment on the property holders as hereinafter
provided, to lay, put down and connect such sewers; and pro-
vided further that it shall be considered an essential part of
the work of street improvement that sewer, water pipe and gas
pipe connections be run from such sewer, water main or gas
main to the curb line of lot abutting on the street to be paved,
whether improved or unimproved, and the cost of making such
water and gas connections to be assessed against the owners
of the water and gas mains after due notice by advertisement
to said owners and the owners of the water and gas mains re-
spectively shall be required to connect and repair all known
defects in the mains in the said lines while the work is in
progress, and lay new mains wherever said commission shall
determine the same necessary, and shall give due notice there-
of.

SEC. 9. And be it enacted, That "The Commissioners of
Cambridge" aforesaid, are hereby authorized, empowered and
required to assess a part of the cost of improving such streets
as may be improved under the terms of this Act upon the prop-
erty binding and abutting on each side of said streets in the
following manner: On the property on each side of High street,
between Water and Church streets, the said Commissioners of
Cambridge shall assess the entire cost of paving (not includ-
ing curbing and gutter work, if any), a strip of said portion of
said High street six feet in width and for length running the
entire distance of said portion of said street between Water
and Church streets aforesaid, that is to say, that the property,
or the owners of such property, abutting on the south side of
said portion of High street shall be assessed with the cost of
paving a strip or portion of the dimensions above stated, and
that the property or the owners of such property, abutting on
the north side of said part of High street shall be assessed with
the cost of paving a strip or portion of the dimensions above
stated; in like manner the said Commissioners of Cambridge
shall assess on the property abutting on each side of High
street, between Church and Locust streets, and upon the prop-
erty abutting on each side of Poplar street, and upon the prop-
erty abutting on each side of Race street between Poplar and
Muir streets, the entire cost of paving and improving a strip
eight feet in width on each side of the aforesaid streets, or part
