SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 99.
AN ACT to repeal Sections two, six, seven, eight, nine,
eleven, thirteen, sixteen and twenty-two of the Code of
Public Local Laws, title " Washington County," sub title
" Sharpsburg," as enacted by the Acts of 1894, Chapter
634, and Sections ten, twelve and twenty-one, as re-enacted
by the Acts of 1896, Chapter 67, and to re-enact the same
with amendments.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That sections two, six, seven, eight, nine, eleven, thirteen,

sixteen and twenty-two, of the Code of Public Local Laws,
title " Washington County," sub-title " Sharpsburg," as
enacted by the Acts of 1894, chapter 634, and sections ten,
twelve and twenty-one, as re-enacted by the Acts of 1896,
chapter 67 be and the same are hereby repealed and re-enacted
with, amendments, so as to read as follows :
SEC. 2. The inhabitants of Sharpsburg, in Washington

county, State of Maryland, are hereby created a corporation,
by the name of the Burgess and Commissioners of Sharps-
burg, and by that name shall have perpetual succession, may
sue and be sued, may have and use a common seal, and pos-
sess such other incidents and powers as attach by law to a
municipal corporation ; and may purchase and hold real, per-
sonal and mixed property for the benefit of said corporation ;
provided, however, the Burgess and Commissioners shall not
purchase or acquire any real estate unless they shall first pro-
vide by ordinance for said purchase and the mode and manner
of payment therefor ; and all ordinances for the purchase of
real estate shall provide for submitting the question of said
purchase to the qualified voter of the town in an election to be
neld as hereinafter provided for town officers, after at least
three weeks' notice of such election by hand-bills posted in at
least six of the most public places in said town ; and said
notice shall set forth the ordinance in full, and the mode and
manner of payment proposed ; and no such ordinance shall be
of any force or validity unless it shall receive a majority of
all votes cast at said election.
SEC. 6. In case of a vacancy in the office of Burgess, by
death or otherwise, the assistant Burgess shall hold the office
