of Burgess during the unexpired term, after taking the oath
of office as required of the Burgess ; and the Commissioners
shall elect a successor to till the unexpired term of the assist-
ant Burgess by a majority vote of their number. The person
so elected shall, within three days, qualify as hereinafter pro-
vided ; and if such person shall fail to so qualify another
election shall be held, and so on until the vacancy is tilled.
SEC. 7. The Burgess shall preside at all meetings of the

shall see that the ordinances aie faithfully executed, and for
his services shall receive an annual salary of ten dollars. In
the absence of the Burgees, the assistant Burgess shall assume
the duties of the Burgess; he shall, in all cases, have the same
vote as a Commissioner, except when acting as Burgess.

the same as those of the Burgess and assistant Burgess. The
assistant Burgess and Commissioners shall each receive for his
services twenty-five cents for each regular or called meeting at
which he shall be present ; whenever one or two vacancies may
occur in the office of Commissioners, such vacancy shall be
filled in the same manner as that provided for in section 6 in
the case of assistant Burgess ; but should three or more vacan-
cies occur at one time the Burgess shall order an election to
be held in conformity with the provisions for regular elections,
to fill the unexpired terms.

in at least six public places in said town, at least ten days prior
to the date of said election, the officers to be voted for, or the
objects and purposes of said election, in writing, one qualified
voter of said town to act as judge of election, who, before he
shall proceed to act as such, shall take the following oath
or affirmation before the Burgess or a justice of the peace in
Washington county: I will fairly and impartially act as judge
of the municipal election to be held in town of Sharpsburg
on the day of September, A. D. , according to the
best of my knowledge and understanding of law. A certifi-
cate that said oath or affirmation has been administered shall
accompany the election returns as hereinafter provided. On
failure of the judge so appointed to appear, the Burgess shall
appoint another qualified person, and so on until a judge is
secured ; and in case of death, absence, inability or refusal of
