Chapter 386.
AN ACT to repeal section two, sub-chapter
eleven, of chapter four hundred and sixty-three
of the acts of assembly passed January session,
eighteen hundred and seventy-four, entitled
"Public Education," providing a general sys-
tem of free public schools for the State of
Maryland, and re-enact the same with amend-
ment.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General As-
sembly of Maryland, That section two, sub-chap-

ter eleven, of chapter four hundred and sixty-
three of the acts of assembly passed January
session, eighteen hundred and seventy-four, en-
titled "Public Education," providing a general
system of free public schools for the State of
Maryland, be and the same is hereby repealed
and re-enacted with amendment so as to read
as follows :
SEC. 2. The certificate issued by each county
examiner shall be numbered and registered in a

book kept by the board of county school com-
missioners, and be delivered to their successors in
office, and shall be denominated first or second
grade, as the case may be ; and the state board of
education shall keep a book in the same manner as
the county examiner ; certificates of the first
grade shall embrace orthography, reading, writ-
ing, arithmetic, geography, history, English
grammar, book-keeping, algebra and natural
philosophy ; and those of the second shall em-
brace orthography, reading, writing, arithmetic,
geography, history and English grammar; but
the state board of education may add additional
