sioners is hereby authorized, whenever in its
opinion the efficiency of the service may require
it, to retire any clerk or turnkey appointed
by it, and pay him in monthly instalments, of
the special said fund, for life, a sum of money
not to exceed one-third in amount of the
money monthly paid to him as such clerk or
turnkey at the time of said retirement; pro-
vided, however, he shall have faithfully served
in any capacity under the said board of police
commissioners for a period of not less than six-
teen years, or shall have been permanently dis-
abled whilst in the discharge of his duty in said
service ; and the said board shall in every case,
before making such retirement, procure and file
among the records a certificate of a competent
and reputable physician, selected by it, that
the person proposed to be retired had been
thoroughly examined by him, and that he is
incapable of performing further duty as such

to suspend said payment if in their judgment,
After trial, said clerk or turnkey is living an
improper or immoral life, such suspension to
continue as long as such a life, in the opinion of
said board, is pursued by said clerk or turnkey ;
provided, however, that the provisions of this
act shall not apply to any clerk appointed by
said board of police commissioners who has not,
immediately prior to his appointment, served in
some capacity whereby he has been required to
perform police duty.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall
take effect from the date of its passage.
