thirty-four of the acts of eighteen hundred and
eighty- two, entitled "An act to grant certain
leave of absence with pay to the Officers, Patrol-
men and Detectives constituting the Police Force
of the City of Baltimore," be and the same is
hereby repealed, and is re-enacted so as to read
as follows :
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the board of police com-

missioners for the city of Baltimore be and they
are hereby authorized, empowered and directed
to grant leave of absence, with pay, for a period
of ten days in each consecutive year of service,
to each of the officers of police, policemen and
detectives of the regular force employed by said
board; nor shall any enforced absence with leave,
on account of sickness or death, be deducted
from the pay of said officer of police, policeman
or detective, or from the ten days' leave herein
provided.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That the
board of police commissioners of Baltimore city

are hereby authorized and empowered to appoint
twenty additional officers, who shall be known
as probation officers, who shall hold their places
without a commission until vacancies shall oc-
cur in the regular force, when they shall be ap-
pointed to such vacancies in the order of their
appointment on the probationary list ; provided,
that at the time of said vacancy they shall, in
the judgment of the board of police commission-
ers, be fully competent in all respects to be com-
missioned for the full term of four years ; that
the pay of said officers, so appointed as aforesaid,
shall be twelve dollars per week, to be paid at
the same time and in the same manner as the
other officers of said police force are paid.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall
take effect from the date of its passage.
