shall arrange the police force so that a part of

them shall be on duty during each day, and a
part of them on duty during each night, and
the said police board shall furnish the police
with proper arms and a badge of office that the
police shall wear exposed on the left breast of
their coat, and the said board of police commis-
sioners shall have power and authority to make
and pass such by-laws, rules and regulations
governing the police appointed by them as in
their judgment shall best insure the efficiency of
the force and preserve the peace of the town,
and direct how the town shall be patrolled by
said police, so that at least one policeman shall
be in the vicinity of Cambridge harbor and
bridge over the same, and the said police com-
missioners shall allow each policeman for the
faithful performance of their duties not less
than twenty-five nor more than thirty dollars
per month, and at the expiration of each month's
service of a policeman the said board of police
commissioners, or a majority of them, shall give
to said policeman an order on the town clerk
and treasurer of Cambridge for the month's pay
of said policeman, which said order shall be
paid in cash on presentation to said town clerk
and treasurer.
SEC. 36B. It shall be the duty of the police of
Cambridge to faithfully perform the duties im-

posed upon them by this act, and the duty that
may be required of them by the by-laws, rules
and regulations passed by the said police board ;
also, to arrest all persons found drunk, or disor-
derly persons, and to enter all places where they
have reason to believe that gambling is going
on or intoxicating spirits are sold contrary to
law, or places where any other unlawful act or
acts are committed, and to arrest all persons
found in such places engaged, or believed to have
been engaged, in said unlawful acts. All arrests
made by said police on the Sabbath shall be
taken to the county jail, and there placed in the
custody of the sheriff, or his deputy, until Mon-
day morning, when they shall be taken before a
justice of the peace, or a judge of the circuit
