the board cannot, agree upon such appointment,
then the names of three persons who are eligible
shall be submitted for selection for officers of
registration, judge or clerk, as the case may be,
by the supervisor or supervisors belonging to
the leading political party entitled to be repre-
sented by such registration officer, judge or
clerk; and out of said three names the other
supervisor or supervisors representing the other
leading political party of the state shall select
the name of such registration officer, judge or
clerk, who, when so selected, shall be appointed
the registration officer, judge or clerk if other-
wise eligible, and shall serve, unless excused by

said board of supervisors of election. The said
judges of election shall receive two dollars per
diem each for their services. The compensation
of such judges and clerks, and all expenses to
be incurred by said judges under this sub-title
or otherwise, according to law, as well as all
expenses to be incurred by the said board of
supervisors necessary and proper for the per-
formance of their duties as aforesaid, or in ex-
ecution thereof, including the cost of new regis-
tration books for the officers of registration
whenever such new books shall be necessary,
shall be paid and recoverable from the mayor
and city council of Baltimore, and shall be pro-
vided for by said mayor and city council by tax-
ation or otherwise.

Compensa-
tion.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this
act shall take effect from the date of its passage.

Approved March 23, 1888.

Effective.
