in said town for the sale of any goods, wares or merchandise; to

901

regulate and provide for the issuing of license to all traveling
persons who dispense medicines or medical advice; to regulate,
license and tax all public shows, amusements, entertainments
or exhibitions; to restrain disorders, disturbances and immo-
ralities; to regulate, license and tax restaurants and saloons,
and other places where malt, spirituous, vinous or fermented
liquors are sold; to regulate, license and tax all hackney
carriages, omnibuses or other vehicles used in said town for
the carriage of passengers; to regulate and license all carriages
for private use, and all vehicles used for the carriage, transpor-
tation or delivery of freight or merchandise, and all carts or
other vehicles which ply for hire; to suppress vagrancy; to
levy a tax and impose a license upon dogs and bitches, and to
provide for the killing of all worthless, dangerous or annoying
dogs and bitches, and of all dogs and bitches not properly
licensed; and to regulate or prevent the going at large within
the limits of said town, of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, swine,
geese, dogs or any other brute, beasts or fowl; and to build or
secure a place of confinement for persons charged or convicted
of violating the laws and ordinances of said corporation of
Taneytown; and they may pass all ordinances necessary from
time to time to carry out and enforce the foregoing provisions,
and to enforce the observance of such ordinances by reason-
able fines and penalties, not exceeding fifty dollars in any one
case, as may appear to them right; and they may recover said
fine or penalty by an action of debt; and in addition thereto
they may provide for the imprisonment of the offender for a
period not exceeding thirty days or until the fine be paid;
provided, that no greater sum than one hundred dollars be
charged for any one license, and instead of the aforesaid pen-
alties, shall be lawful, in case of the conviction of any person
for vagrancy, to sentence such person to hard work for a
period not exceeding ten days.

May pass or-
dinances.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That all laws inconsistent with
or repugnant to the provisions of this act be and the same are
hereby repealed to the extent of such inconsistency; and this
act shall take effect from the date of its passage.

Approved April 6th, 1894.
