urer and
collector.

powered to elect at the general State election to be held in the
year eighteen hundred and ninety-five, and every two years
thereafter, some properly qualified citizen of Somerset county
to be county treasurer and collector of State and county
taxes, which said officer shall hold his office for two years
from the first day of July in the year eighteen hundred
and ninety-six; and it shall be his duty to collect all State and
county taxes which may be levied within the period of his
term of office by the proper State and the county authorities
in Somerset county, and to disburse the county taxes under the
supervision and by the order of the County Commissioners of
Somerset county; and until such election can be held under the
provisions of this act, William S. McMaster be and he is here-
by appointed, authorized and empowered to act as such county
treasurer and collector of State and county taxes, and for
this purpose the said William S. McMaster and his successor
in office are hereby clothed with all the powers possessed by
collectors of taxes under the provisions of the Code of Public

Deputies.

General Laws of Maryland; and said treasurer and collector
may appoint one or more deputies, who shall be authorized
and empowered to act in his place, and for whose acts said
county treasurer and collector shall be responsible, and to
whom he may pay such compensation as he shall deem proper
out of the salary which may be allowed him for his service
as such treasurer and collector; and the said William S.
McMaster shall enter upon the duties of his office on the first
day of July, in the year eighteen hundred and ninety-four,
and continue in the same until the election and qualification of
his successor, which qualification shall not be later than the
first day of July, eighteen hundred and ninety-six; and in case
any vacancy in said office should occur by reason of death,
refusal to serve or other disqualifying cause, the County Com-
missioners shall have power to fill such vacancy for the balance
of such unexpired term.

SEC. 214. And be it enacted, That the treasurer and collector
so as aforesaid appointed, and his successors in office, shall be
required, before entering upon the duties of the office of
treasurer and collector, so as aforesaid appointed, and his

State of Maryland two bonds, with sureties to be approved
by the board of County Commissioners of Somerset county,
one for double the amount of State taxes to be collected,
and conditioned for faithful collection and payment to the
