329 A. The House of the Good Shepherd for Colored Girls
of the City of Baltimore, organized under the general incor-
poration laws of this State, for the purpose of affording a
refuge to colored females who have had the misfortune to lead
an evil life, and who wish to abandon their vicious course, and
reform, such persons to be received without distinction of
creed, age or place of birth or residence, be and the same are
declared to be a body corporate and politic of this State for
the purpose aforesaid, and is hereby, as to colored females,

vested with all such powers and charged with all such duties as
have heretofore conferred or charged by law, as to white
females, on the House of the Good Shepherd of the City of
Baltimore.

329 B. And be it further enacted, That all courts and jus-
tices of the peace are hereby authorized and empowered to
commit colored females to said corporations, for like causes, in
like manner and for like terms as they are now by law author-
ized to commit white females to the "House of Good Shep-
herd" of the City of Baltimore, and the judge of the Criminal
Court, the president of the board of police commissioners, and
the marshal of police of the city of Baltimore shall, at such
times as they think proper, visit and inspect the said institution.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this act shall take
effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 188.

AN ACT to provide for the protection of merchants, who
are bona fide residents of Somerset, Dorchester, Calvert,
Talbot, Garrett, Allegany, St. Mary's, Caroline, Worcester,
Wicomico and Charles Counties, by fixing license and
penalties for hawkers or peddlers, either walking or with
horse and wagon in said counties.

Effective.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the clerk of the Circuit Court for Somerset,
Dorchester, Calvert, Talbot, Garrett, Allegany, St. Mary's,
Caroline, Worcester, Wicomico and Charles counties, shall not
