LAWS OF MARYLAND.

sum than fifteen dollars be charged for any one license. They
shall have power to provide for the codification of all ordi-
nances and by-laws which may have been or may hereafter be
passed. And for the purpose of carrying out the aforegoing
powers and for the preservation of the cleanliness, health,
peace and good order of the community, and to protect the
lives and property of the citizens, to suppress and abate all
nuisances within the corporate and sanitary limits of said town,
they may pass all ordinances or by-laws from time to time
necessary; and to insure the observances of said ordinances
they may affix thereto such reasonable fine, not exceeding ten
dollars in any case, as to them may appear right; and in default
of the payment of any fine imposed, they may provide for the
imprisonment of the offender for a period not exceeding thirty
days or until the fine is paid.

Ordinances
continued
in force.

SEC. 14. That all by-laws and ordinances heretofore passed
by the burgess and commissioners of Sharpsburg, now in force,
and not in conflict with the provisions of this act, are hereby
continued in force, until the same are repealed or modified; and
all acts or parts of acts done and performed by the said bur-
gess and commissioners of said town in discharge .of their
regular duties, prior to the passage of this act, are hereby
declared to be valid and binding upon said town and its inhab-
itants thereof; provided, the same are not in conflict with any
of the by-laws or ordinances of the town heretofore passed.

Approval
or veto of
ordinances.

SEC. 15. All ordinances in pursuance of the powers con-
ferred by section thirteen shall be sent to the burgess for his
approval; he shall return the same to the next general or
specified meeting of the commissioners, with his approval or
disapproval; any ordinance returned by the burgess with his
approval, shall not become a law unless subsequently passed at
the first regular meeting thereafter by a four- fifths vote of the
commissioners.

Turnpike
roads.

SEC. 16. The burgess and commissioners shall have power
to compel all turnpike companies, whose roads or any part
thereof lie within the limits of the town, to perform all the
duties and obligations imposed upon them by their respective
charters or the laws of this State, upon such facts thereof as
are within the limits of the town, and shall have power to
enter into agreements with the said turnpike companies in
relation to the grading, paving and repairing of the parts of
their respective roads lying within said limits of the town.
