LAWS OF MARYLAND.

New section.

eleven of the Code of Public Local Laws of the State of
Maryland, entitled "Frederick County," sub-title "Frederick,"
to follow Section two hundred and seventy, and to be known
as "Section two hundred and seventy A."

Power of
mayor and
aldermen.

SEC. 270 A. The mayor and aldermen of Frederick shall
have power to pass all ordinances necessary for the good
government of the city, to prevent, removal and abate all
nuisances or obstructions in or upon the streets, highways,
lanes or alleys, drains or water courses; to remove, or cause to
be removed, houses or other structures that may be dangerous
to persons passing along and over any of the highways of the
city; to make reasonable regulations in regard to buildings to
be erected in said city, and to grant building permits for the
same; to cause sidewalks along the public streets and high-
ways of said city to be graded, paved, repaired or improved ;
curbs to be set and gutters laid, at the cost and expense of the
abutting property or the owner thereof, or compel, by fine or
otherwise, the owner or proprietor of any lot or lots to pave
or repave the sidewalks or footways; to establish and regulate
a station house or lockup for temporary confinement of viola-
tors of the laws and ordinances of the city; to suppress

vagrancy; and for the purpose of carrying out the following
powers, and for the preservation of the cleanliness, health,
peace and good order of the community, and for the protec-
tion of the lives and property of the citizens, and for the
violation of any ordinance or any section of any ordinance
passed under the provisions of this section or by authority
thereof, they may impose such reasonable fines, not exceeding
twenty dollars in any case, as to them appear right; and in
default of the payment of any fine, imposed, they may pro-
vide for the imprisonment of the offender for a period not
exceeding thirty days, or until the fine be paid.

Effective.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.
