CHAPTER 485.
AN ACT to correct the assessment of the capital stock of the
Maryland Telephone Company of Baltimore City for the
year 1898 and year 1899.

CHAP. 485.

WHEREAS, The capital stock of the Maryland Telephone
Company has been assessed since the year 1899 at twenty
thousand dollars; and
WHEREAS, The same was assessed at one hundred thousand
dollars for the years 1898 and 1899, although said stock was
of less value during said years 1898 and 1899 than it has been
since ; and
WHEREAS, On account of lack of knowledge of the law on
the part of the officers of said company, they failed to appeal
from said assessment to the State Board of Appeals within
the period required by law, but subsequently petitioned said
Board of Appeals to reduce said excessive asssesment, and
whilst said Board of Appeals favors said reduction because it
is eminently proper, just and equitable, yet said board was
powerless to act, as the time for appeal had passed when said
petition was presented ; therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the assessment of the capital stock of the
Maryland Telephone Company of Baltimore City for the years
1898 and 1899 be and the same is hereby reduced from one
hundred thousand dollars to twenty thousand dollars, the said
reduction having received the recommendation of the Comp-
troller, the Treasurer and the State Tax Commissioner.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 486.
AN ACT to add a new Section to Article 81 of the Code of
Public General Laws, title "Revenue and Taxes," to be
designated 221, to follow Section 220 of said Article, and to
repeal all Acts or parts of Acts, laws or parts of laws, in
conflict with the provisions of this Act, so far as the same
shall be so in conflict.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That a new section be and the same is hereby
added to Article 81 of the Code of Public General Laws, title
"Revenue and Taxes," to follow section 220, and to be desig-
nated as section 221, and to read as follows :
