CHAPTER 367.
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact with amendments Chapter
515 of the Acts of the General Assembly of Maryland,
passed at the January Session, 1898, entitled an Act to create
and sustain by taxation Public Libraries and Reading Rooms.

CHAP. 367.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That chapter 15 of the Acts of the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, passed at its January Session, 1898, entitled
"An Act to create and sustain by taxation Public Libraries
and Reading Rooms," be and the same is hereby repealed and
re-enacted with amendments, so as to read as follows:

Repeal
and re-enact.

SEC. 2. Be it enacted, That the Board of County Commis-
sioners of any county in the State shall have power to estab-
lish and maintain free public libraries and reading rooms in
their respective counties for the use and benefit of the people
of such counties, and for that purpose may levy an annual tax
not exceeding tive cents on each one hundred dollars of the
assessed valuation of taxable property, such. tax to be levied
and collected in like manner as other general taxes of said
county, and when collected to be known as the free library
fund.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said Board of County
Commissioners shall have power to establish free libraries in the
county seats of their respective counties, and in such incorpor-
ated town within the limits of said counties as the exigencies
of the case may require and the demand of the people of said
incorporated towns and vicinity may justify, so as to give them
convenient access to the free libraries and reading rooms.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the governing boards of any
municipality within the limits of any county may, in addition
to the tax to be levied, as hereinbefore provided by the County
Commissioners, by a tax upon the assessed valuation of the
taxable property of said incorporated town, not exceeding
seven cents on each one hundred dollars, to be collected in like
manner as the other taxes of said municipality. The money
so collected by the governing boards of the incorporated towns
to be paid over to the trustees or board of directors, to be
appointed as hereinafter provided, and to be expended by them
as in their judgment they may deem best.

SEC. 5. And be it further enacted, That whenever any
Board of County Commissioners shall have determined to
establish and maintain public libraries and reading rooms
under this Act, such Board of County Commissioners shall
appoint for such county a board of nine directors, to be known
as library directors, who are to be chosen at large with refer-
