apportioned by the Comptroller among the several counties
and city of Baltimore in proportion to their respective popu-
lation between the ages of five and twenty ; and
WHEREAS, The best interest of the State demands that the
said public school tax shall be apportioned upon the basis of
the State census of 1901 ; now, therefore,

CHAP 206.
Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That in order to carry out the provisions of this
Act, the Governor be and he is hereby authorized to appoint
some competent person or persons, whose duty it shall be to
ascertain and compile forthwith the population in the various
counties and city of Baltimore between the ages of tive and
twenty, as returned by the Superintendent of the Census
under chapter 3 of the Acts of the extraordinary session of
1901, and to certify to the Governor the number of white and
colored persons in the various counties and city of Baltimore,
respectively, between the ages of tive and twenty; provided,
said compilation shall be made and returned to the Governor
not later than May 25, 1902.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of the
Governor, upon the receipt of the compilation aforesaid, to
certify the same to the Comptroller of the Treasury, which
compilation shall be the basis of the apportionment of the
public school tax by said officer.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the sum of fifteen hundred
dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary, be and the
same is hereby appropriated to carry out the provisions of this
Act, and the Comptroller is authorized, upon the requisition
of the Governor, to draw his warrant upon the Treasurer for
the said sum of fifteen hundred dollars, or so much thereof as
may be necessary.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

AN ACT to appropriate the sum of five thousand dollars for
the joint use of the commissioners appointed by the Gov-
ernor to represent the State of Maryland at the South Caro-
lina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition now being
held at Charleston, South Carolina.

WHEREAS, The South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian
