treasury not otherwise appropriated in the year eighteen hun-
dred and ninety-six, and the remaining five thousand dollars
likewise be paid in the year eighteen hundred and ninety-seven,
by the Treasurer df the State of Maryland to Colonel Willard
Howard, or other commanding officer of said regiment, to be
used by him in discharging the debts incurred in making the
necessary repairs, alterations and improvements to said build-
ing.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 389.
AN ACT to authorize the Mayor and Council of Hagerstown
to appropriate a sum of money to assist the Pioneer Hook
and Ladder Company in the purchase of a hook and ladder
apparatus to aid and assist the Fire Department of Hagers-
town, and to levy a special tax for the payment of the same.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the Mayor and Council of Hagerstown be, and
they are hereby authorized and empowered to appropriate a
sum of money not exceeding $72 to assist the Pioneer Hook
and Ladder Company in the purchase of a hook and ladder
apparatus to aid and assist the Fire Department of Hagerstown :
and the said Mayor and Council of Hagerstown are hereby
further authorized and empowered to levy the amount of said
appropriation upon the taxable property in said Hagerstown al
the time next ensuing the passage of this act when other taxes
are levied by said Mayor and Council of Hagerstown, the said
tax to be in addition to the thirty cents levy for general pur
poses, as provided for in section 195 of the charter of Hagers
town.
