LAWS OF MARYLAND.

this appropriation being made for the purpose of compensating
the eaid children for the destruction of the country residence of
their father, the late Augustus W. Bradford, then Governor of
the State, together with its contents, on the 11th of July, 1864,
under an order issued by General Bradley T. Johnson, in com-
mand of a Confederate force, which order recited that the direc-
tion to burn was given in retaliation for the burning of the
home of Governor Letcher, of Yirginia, then recently accom-
plished by the Union troops operating under the command of
General Hunter, in the Valley of Virginia.

Effective.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

Approved April 4th, 1896.

CHAPTER 388.

AN ACT to appropriate a sum of money to assist in defray-
ing expenses of remodeling, repairing and platting in condi-
tion for use as an armory for the Fourth Regiment Maryland
National Guard, the building known as the Western Female
High School, on west Fayette near Paca, in the city of
Baltimore.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, The Mayor and City Council of Baltimore have
by proper ordinance given the building and ground known as
the Western Female High School, situate on west Fayette
street, in the city of Baltimore, between Paca and Green streets,
to the Fourth Regiment Maryland National Guard, to be used
by it for the purposes of an armory; and

Preamble.

WHEREAS, Said building will need remodeling, repairing,
etc., to place it in condition suitable for the needs and require-
ments of said Regiment; therefore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the sum of fifteen thousand dollars be and the
same is hereby appropriated to assist in defraying expenses in
repairing, remodeling and refitting the building known as the
Western Female High School, in the city of Baltimore, for
the purpose of an armory, to be used by the Fourth Regiment
Maryland National Guard.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the sum of ten thousand
dollars so appropriated shall be paid out of any funds in the
