WHEREAS, On the twelfth day of February, eighteen hun-
dred and ninety-six, the main building of Charlotte Hall
Academy, in St. Mary's county, was destroyed by fire; and

Preamble.

WHEREAS, The said institution is the next oldest institution
for education in the State of Maryland, and the only institution
of its kind in Southern Maryland; and

WHEREAS, It has so well performed the duties incident to
its purposes of incorporation, and has been so useful in the
dissemination of knowledge and in the proper educational
and moral training of the youth of the State; and,

Preamble.

WHEREAS, Without assistance from the State it is impossi-
ble to rebuilt the burned buildings.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the sum of five thousand dollars be and the same
is hereby appropriated out of any moneys in the State Treas-
ury not otherwise appropriated, and that the Comptroller be
and he is hereby directed to draw his warrant upon the Treas-
urer of the State to the order of the board of trustees of
Charlotte Hall Academy, in such sums and at such times as
the said trustees shall produce proper vouchers f or the expendi-
ture of said sums in the rebuilding said main building of
Charlotte Haff Academy; provided, that such warrants shall
not exceed in the aggregate the said sum of five thousand
dollars.

Appropria-
tion.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 154.

AN ACT to amend the charter of the Baltimore Association
for the Improvement of the Condition of the Poor, being
an additional Act to the Act of 1888, Chapter twenty-
four.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
