year eighteen hundred and twenty-eight, and tender his list
to the respective sheriffs of the several counties from which
said fees are due, by the first day of April next; and the said
respective sheriffs are hereby required to receive the said
list, and give their receipts to the said Aquilla Beall, for the
same.

CHAP. 75.
|
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the respective sheriffs
aforesaid, be, and they are hereby required to collect and ac-
count for said fees in the usual manner.
|

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That the bonds of the said she-
riffs shall be responsible for the collection, and a true and
faithful account of said fees, in the same manner, and to the
same extent, as if said fees had been placed in the hands of
said sheriffs for collection, on or before the first day of March,

any former law to the contrary notwithstanding, Provided,
that nothing herein contained, shall opperate to limit or shor-
ten the time now allowed by law, to sheriffs to collect officers
fees.

An act to incorporate the Female Penitents Refuge, hi the city
of Baltimore.

SECTION. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Jacob Small, John Glendy, Jannes Brundige,
Noah Ridgely, Hugh Boyle, R S. Steuart and Stephen Wil-
liams, together with such others as may hereatter be associ-
ated with them, and their successors be, and they hereby are
incorporated by the name of The Penitent Females Refuge in
the city of Baltimore, and by that name shall be a corporation
and body politic forever, for the purpose of affording relief,
assistance and protection to penitent females, with power to
have a common seal, to receive and hold any sum or sums of
money, from persons disposed to promote the intentions of
said society; to make contracts relative to the objects thereof,
to sue and be sued, to establish bye-laws and orders f or the
regulation of said society, and the due preservation and ap-
plication of its funds provided the same be not repugnant to
the constitution and laws of the United States, or of this
state, and to take and hold real and personal estate, not ex-
ceeding the sum of ten thousand dollars, annually.

SEC. 2, And be it enacted, That said corporation shall an-
nually meet in Baltimore, at such time and place, as they may
from time to time appoint, for the purpose of electing, by-
ballot, such officers as they may think proper, who shall hold
their respective offices for the term of one year, and until
others shall be elected and qualified in sheir stead, with such
powers and duties as may be prescribed by the bye-laws of
said corporation.
