CHAPTER 193.
An act to Incorporate the Young Men's Bible Society of Frede-
rick county.

|
WHEREAS, it is represented to this General Assembly,
that a number of the inhabitants of Frederick county have
formed themselves into a societ) for the purpose of furnishing
the Holy Scriptures to those of their fellow citizens, who
from poverty, or other causes, are unprovided therewith; and
whereas this General Assembly is desirous to aid and encour-
age an institution so apostolic in its objects — Therefore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land That James M. Shelman, John A. Donne, James G.
M'Neely, Dr. Henry Stalcy, Seth Thomas, George Kooutz,
Jacob Englebrecht, William L. Helfenstein, Lewis Rams-
burgh, George Englebrecht, Augustus L. Ebbert, John Han-
shew, Robert Laird, Dr- Albert Ritchie, William J. Rossr
Thomas Shriver, Alien P. Duvall, William Marvin, William
Webber, and John C, Howard, and others who are or may
hereafter be admitted into their society, agreeably to such rules
and by-laws as now are. or as they may from time to time es-
tablish for the beneficial and- orderly management of their in-
stitution, shall be, and they and their successors and assigns
are hereby declared to be one community, corporation, and
body politic, forever hereafter, by the name and style of the
Young Men's Bible Society of Frederick county.

SEC, 2. And be it enacted, That the corporation and their
successors, by the aforesaid name shall be, and are hereby made-
able and capable in law to have, purchase, receive, possess,
enjoy and retain to them and their successors, lands, tene-
ments, rents, annuities, pensions, and other hereditaments, in
fee simple, or for a term of years, life, lives, or otherwise,
and also goods, chattels, and effects of what nature, kind or
quality soever, and the same to grant, demise, alien, or dis-
pose of, and by the name aforesaid, to do and execute all other
things touching the same; Provided, That the clear yearly
value of the real estate of said corporation, exclusive of any
house which they may hereafter possess for the keeping of the
books and effects of the society, exceed not the sum of three
thousand dollars.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said society and their
successors, by the aforesaid name, shall be forever hereafter
able and capable in law, to sue and be sued, plead and be im-
pleaded, answer and be answered, defend and be defended in
any court of record, or any place whatsoever, and also to sue
for all legacies which have been left to said society prior to
this act of incorporation, and to make, have and use a common
seal, and the same to break, alter and renew at pleasure, and
also to assemble and meet at such times and places as they
may agi ee upon, and by a majority of the voices of those at-
tending to ordain, establish and put in execution such by-laws,
ordinances and regulations as to them shall seem necessary
and convenient for the government of the society and institu-
