1837.

passed at December session, eighteen hundred and twenty-
six, chapter two hundred and twenty-nine, entitled, an addi-
tional supplement to the act concerning crimes and punish-
ments: Provided The said treasurer shall not borrow more
than four thousand dollars of the said sum within the present
year.

CHAP. 154

Proviso.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the directors of the peni-
tentiary shall pay quarterly to the treasurer of the Western
Shore, out of the nett profits of the institution, a sum equiva-
lent to the quarterly interest on the loan or loans to be ob-
tained by virtue of this act, to be applied by the said treasur-
er to the discharge of the interest on the said loan or loans,
and the said directors shall also pay annually to the treasures
aforesaid the sum of five hundred dollars, to be invested by
him, together with any premium he may have received on the
loan or loans herein authorised to be obtained, in some pro-
fitable stock, which said investment, with the interest accru-
ing thereon, is hereby specifically pledged for the ultimate
redemption of said loan or loans.

Sec. 3 And be it enacted. That the directors of the peni-
tentiary shall, as far as practicable, employ the convicts in
the erection of the said wall and leveling the ground pur-
chased by them, and they are hereby authorised to draw on
the treasurer of the Western Shore, to be paid out of any
unappropriated money in the treasury, for any sum not ex-
ceeding four thousand dollars within the present year, and a
like sum in the succeeding year.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the said directors shall re-
port to the legislature the cost of the said ground; and the
expense of leveling and erecting a wall around the same, as
soon as the work shall have been completed.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That at the time of the appoint-
ment of directors of the penitentiary, the governor and coun-
cil shall designate the two directors who are to act as the
executive committee, and when any vacancy occurs in said
committee, shall fill up the same

CHAPTER 155.

 

An act directing the payment of the salaries of the Clerks, Phy-
sician and other persons employed by the Directors of the
Penitentiary.

Passed March 10,
1828.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the directors of the Maryland Penitentiary, from and after
the passage of this act, shall pay to the several persons em-
ployed by them as officers, agents, clerks, physician, deputy
keepers, and so forth, of the Penitentiary, their salaries out of
the funds of the institution, and the treasurer of the Western
Shore of Maryland is hereby prohibited from paying any money
for such salaries that does not accrue or become due before the
passage of this act.
