6 TWENTY-FIRST ANNUAL REPORT
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Appropriations for the Hall of Records for fiscal year 1956 exceeded
those for 1955 by several thousands of dollars as the table here below will in-
dicate; however our actual expenditures were several hundred dollars less,
due to the fact that one position of Junior Archivist was vacant from the first
part of February 1956 until the end of the fiscal year. It should be pointed
out too that we asked for and expended less money in that part of our budget
labelled "operating expenses/' It is not likely that we can repeat such a per-
formance this year because of the general salary increases which went into
effect October 1, 1956 and also because prices of the supplies and equipment
which we need for our repair room, photographic laboratory and stack area
have increased appreciably during the last few months of the fiscal year and by-
all indications will continue upward rather than otherwise.
Receipts were higher than ever before and much higher than the estimate
which we made for the Comptroller of the Treasury at the beginning of the
fiscal year. This increase was due in part to the fact that first sales for two
new publications fell into one fiscal year. Such a situation will not soon recur.
In addition, there was a larger than usual demand for certified copies of
charters and amendments to charters due to revised requirements of the State
Tax Commission. In fiscal year 1957, the Hall of Records will be responsible
for the collection and deposit of all funds received for scrap paper sold under
the State's contract with scrap paper dealers. Previously such funds had been
paid either to the office which had sold the paper or to the Treasurer. Receipts
for scrap paper will, of course, be listed in future Hall of Records reports but
will be given separately.
