ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS
for professional and clerical help. This increased demand has in
turn raised wage scales which the Hall of Records has not been able
to meet. We have, therefore, lost as many of our employees as we
did in the first year of the war.
Miss Ruth Vermillion, who had been employed on January 1,
1945, resigned on December 15, of the same year, to accept a po-
sition in Washington. Miss Agnes Howard, who had come to the
Hall of Records in June 1943, left in March 1946 to accept a position
with the Maryland Court of Appeals. Mrs. Elisabeth Hartsook, who
had come in April 1943, accepted a position offered by the War De-
partment in June 1946. In July of the new fiscal year Mrs. Louise
H. Pledger who had been secretary at the Hall of Records since
1943, resigned following her marriage. Miss Lulu V. Ebaugh, whose
employment dates from August 1944, has indicated her intention
to resign as of September 1, 1946.
The Archivist reports these resignations with the deepest con-
cern. They cannot but affect our work seriously. Should the wage
scale remain as it is, we cannot hope to retain much longer our few
remaining experienced employees.
To replace Miss Vermillion we employed, in March 1946, Mrs.
Lenvilla Rawlings, who has been made an assistant in the Repair
Department, and during the same month Miss Martha Suit was
employed in the place of Miss Agnes Howard. Two other positions
are now vacant.
