ELEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT
His patience in these matters—certainly trivial in comparison with
his other business, however important to us—was exemplary. In
addition Mr. Tawes as a former Clerk of the Court of Somerset
County has been especially interested in our efforts to assist local
officers in the care of their records. It was because of this interest
that the first Eastern Shore county agreed to send its old records to
the Hall of Records. The successors to Governor O'Conor and Mr.
Tawes will be determined at the General Election in November.
Since no meeting of the Commission was held during the year,
a summary report on unfinished business will perhaps be useful. No
agreement has as yet been reached with the Council of the Mary-
land Historical Society in regard to a division of historical mater-
ials between the Society and the Hall of Records for publication
purposes. In the meanwhile, the Hall of Records has continued to
enlarge its series of printed finding media of which two were pre-
pared during the past year.
The matter of a division of fields of acquisition between the
Society and the Hall of Records was discussed at length by the Di-
rector of the Society and the Archivist and a tentative agreement
was reached subject to the approval of the Council of the Society
and the Hall of Records Commission.
In cooperation with the Librarian of Congress the Hall of Re-
cords is now engaged in a project for copying the microfilm repro-
duction of our older records which was made during the war as an
insurance measure. The original negative has been removed from
the C. Burr Artz Library in Frederick, Maryland where it was de-
posited during the war, and sent to the Library of Congress. The
Library of Congress will retain this negative and provide three pos-
itive copies one of which it will retain; the other two will be sent to
the Huntington Library and to the Public Record Office in London.
The Library of Congress will pay three thousand dollars of the cost,
the Hall of Records eight hundred and twenty-five dollars. The Ar-
chivist is grateful to the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Luther H. Evans,
and to the Trustees of the C. Burr Artz Library for their many
kindnesses in regard to these films.
Maintenance of the Hall of Records was assumed by the Su-
perintendent of Public Buildings and Grounds for a one-year trial
period. As the Hall of Records Commission had no opportunity to
