6 SIXTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE
Maryland Executive papers and suggested that they should be
transferred to the Hall of Records, It was resolved that the Com-
mission through its chairman make a formal request to the Council
of the Maryland Historical Society for the transfer of these papers
to the Hall of Records.
Mr. Tawes then proposed that the Commission take action to
help in the preservation of governmental records not in the posses-
sion of the Hall of Records. The Commission requested Mr. Tawes
to discuss ways and means with the Archivist who might then re-
port any progress at the next meeting of the Commission. The
Commission adjourned at 4.30 P. M.
Those present at the meeting of May 13, 1941, were the Chair-
man, Mr. Tawes, Dr. Bowman, Dr. Pleasants, Mr. Barr. The Com-
mission considered the advisability of taking precautionary meas-
ures now for the protection of the materials in the Hall of Records
in the event of war or threat of war. The Commission agreed that
Fuch measures should be taken, and the Archivist was instructed to
study the situation and report to the Commission at its next
meeting.
Consideration was then given to the problem of what provision
should be made for employees of the Hall of Records who are called
into war service. It was decided that any employee called into
service be given preferential consideration for appointment to his
former position on his return, it being understood that the Com-
mission will be governed in this matter by any regulation which
may be adopted by the State Employment Commissioner.
Mr. Barr informed the Commission that the St. John's College
contemplates the construction of a wall around the College property
and he asked the advice of the Commission whether the property of
the State on which the Hall of Records is built should be included in
this enclosure. A motion was passed recommending that if such a
wall be built it pass to the rear of the building and that there be
gates at the junction of the Hall of Records Easement and the wall
on College Avenue, and at the rear of the building on St. John's
Street. Mr. Barr agreed to consult Mr. Lawrence Hall Fowler on
the design and form of the wall contiguous to the Hall of Records
before construction of the wall begins.
