ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS

HALL OF RECORDS COMMISSION

During the fiscal year there were no changes in the membership
of the Hall of Records Commission. Because of this fortunate cir-
cumstance the Hall of Records has had the advantage of being
guided by a Commission well aware of its problems as well as sympa-
thetic with its objectives. The present members of the Commission
are listed below in this order: chairman, members of the State gov-
ernment, heads of institutions in the order of the ages of these insti
tutions.

HONORABLE CARROLL TANEY BOND, Chief Judge Maryland Court

of Appeals, Chairman.

HONORABLE HERBERT R. O'CONOR, Governor.
HONORABLE J. MILLARD TAWES, Comptroller of the Treasury.
MR. STRINGFELLOW BARR, President of the St. John's College.
HONORABLE GEORGE S. RADCLIFFE, President of the Maryland

Historical Society.
DR. J. HALL PLEASANTS, President of the Board of the Peabody

Institute.

DR. ISAIAH BOWMAN, President of the Johns Hopkins
University.

Membership in the Commission is ex-officio; the chairman is
chosen by the Commission.

Two meetings of the Commission were held during the fiscal
year, October 4, 1940 and May 13, 1941. The first meeting was
reported fully in the Archivist's report for last year, but since it
fell by a few days in this fiscal year the action taken by the Com-
mission at that time should be summarized here if only briefly.
After an inspection of the new installation on the sixth deck, the
new equipment in the photoduplication department and an examina-
tion of some of the work done at the Hall of Records, the Commis-
sion discussed the question of whether the Hall of Records should
have a publication program. It was decided that such a program
was desirable and that it should begin during the biennium 1941-43
with the publication of Liber A of the Prince George's County Court
Records, provided an appropriation for this work be granted by the
Legislature.

Dr. Pleasants reported to the Commission the presence in the
vaults of the Maryland Historical Society of a large collection of
