7. tMnd &e & enacted, Th$tit«hall foe the duty of every in*
«pector of public roads, who shall have endorsed on a supervi-
«or*s account that the roads are not in good repair, and that the
money has not been properly expended, to present the fact to
€he grand jury, and if the grand jury shall find a bill against
the said supervisor, he shall be fined, at the discretion of the
court, not less than ive nar inore than thirty dollars.

Levy court to
meet annually

8. And be it enacted, That the levy court of Montgomery
county shall meet annually on the second Monday in October
to settle the accounts of supervisors.

meet on day ap-

9. And be it enacted, That if the levy court shall not meet
on the second Monday in October in any year, as is hereby di-
rected, that the clerk of Montgomery county shall appoint a
day, within twenty days of the second Monday of October, for
their meeting, to settle the accounts of the supervisors, and give
notice thereof by publication in any newspaper published in
said county..

Inspectors to re-
port, &c.
|
10. And be it enacted. That the inspectors of public roads
shall attend whenever the levy court shall meet to apportion.the
sums for the repair of the public roads among the several dis-
tricts, and the said inspectors shall report to the said court the
sums necessary for the repair of the roads in their several dis-
tricts, and also the sum necessary for making and keeping in re-
pair the bridges of their several districts.

Supervisors to be
furnished with a
list of roads
|
11. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of the
levy court to furnish each supervisor with a list of the public
roads of his district, designating to which district a road shall
belong which is a dividing line between districts.

12. And be it enacted, That the levy court of Montgomery
county shall levy for the repair of public roads, and the super-
visors shall give bond in the same manner as is now required
by law, and said levy court and supervisors shall in all things
conform to the existing laws, where the same are not inconsist-
ent with the provisions of this act

CHAP, CCXXVIII
An Act to authorise Eliakim Littell to institute, carry on, and draw a Lot
ten, the Prizes in which shall consist of Works in Literature and Science.
WHEREAS Eliakim Littell hath represented by his memorial
that he proposes to publish a large collection of the standard
works of literature and science, and to found in the United
States one thousand public libraries, by giving to each state
which shall assist him to carry Ms plan into execution a portion
of that number of every book, to be published by him in pur-
suance of this plan: And whereas the increase of and diffusion
of knowledge, is the surest means of strengthening and per-
fecting the virtue, liberty and independence of this people, and
promoting the happiness aad best interests of the community at
large; Therefore,

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland
That Eliakim Littell be authorised to sell by lottery, to be
drawn under the direction of the commissioners of lotteries in
such divisions or schemes as may be practicable and conveni-
