and covered to the depth of six inches with earth; he shall re-
move from the road all loose stone, and shall in no instance
throw stone into the routs; he shall, in low grounds^ if practica-
ble, throw the road up in a ridge with the plough and scraper,
said make a drain on either side; in marshy and wet places
stone may be used to give the road an elevation above the ad-
jacent moist ground, or for the purpose of a causeway, but it
must in every instance be covered with earth, and drains must
also be cut with the plough, if practicable, of sufficient depth
to preserve the road from being injured by the absorbtion of
water collecting on the sides; he shall examine each break-water
of his district .after every rain calculated to do injury thereto,
to ascertain if it answers the purpose for which it was con-
structed, and whenever he finds any defective, either from er-
ror in construction 'or from use, he shall forthwith correct or
repair the same, and in every instance of neglect so to do, the
injury resulting to the road shall be repaired at his cost; and at
any time he is informed, or otherwise ascertains, that a break-
water has yielded, so that it does not answer its purpose, he
shall forthwith repair it, subject to the same penalty for neglect.

4. And be it enacted, That the supervisors appointed under
this act shall be entitled to receive at the rate of two dollars for
each day they are employed in the execution of the duties here-
by prescribed.

5. And be it enacted. That no supervisor shall at any time
proceed to work and labour on the public roads of his district
without six able bodied hands, unless it be for the purpose of re-
moving fallen trees, or other obstructions, or for repairing or
correcting defects which may take place in a break-water, un-
der the pain of forfeiting his own wages for the time he shall
work without six hands as aforesaid, which shall be deducted
from his allowance by the levy court.

6. And be it enacted. That it shall be the duty of the seve-
ral inspectors of public roads appointed for the several districts,
sometime during ten days next preceding the annual session of
the levy court for the settlement of the accounts of super-
visors, to go over and examine the public roads of the district
for which he shall be appointed, to see if they are in the state of
repair required by this act, and they are severally required to
appear before the said court, at their said session, to examine
the accounts of the supervisors of their several districts, and
before the said accounts are presented to the court, to endorse
them with their own signatures, stating that the roads of said
district are or are not in good repair, as the case may be, and
that the money appropriated has or has not been properly ex-
pended by the supervisor of said district; and no supervisor
shall be reappointed unless there be upon h is account a certificate
of the injectors of his district, thai the roads are in good re-
pair, and the money has been properly expended; the inspec-
tors of the public roads shall receive two dollars for each day
they shall be engaged in the duties prescribed by this act, and
for every instance of neglect of duty they shall pay, at the dis-
cretion of the county court, not less than five nor more than
twenty dollars.
