Mr. Sangston moved their reference to a select committee,
consisting of three members of this House with power to in-
vestigate the subject matter of said memorial and the manu-
facturing department of the Maryland Penitentiary, to send
for persons and papers and take testimony under oath in all
matters pertaining to the same; to sit during the recess of the
Legislature and report on the reassembling of the same;

Mr. Ford moved to refer the same to the committee on
Ways and Means;

Which was lost;

The question then recurring upon the original proposition
to refer the petitions to a select committee, the yeas and nays
being demanded, appeared as follow:
