BIOGRAPHIES WIL

North Carolina; and Mary (Nancy) (by 1744-?),
who married Solomon Clayton (?-1768), of Queen
Anne's County. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION, lit-
erate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, Armley
Parish, Yorkshire, England; St. Paul's Parish,
Queen Anne's County. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: Gent., by 1729; Esq., by 1735. OCCU-
PATIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEG-
ISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Queen Anne's
County, 1738, 1739-1741, 1742-1744, 1745, 1749-
1751, 1751-1754 (jailed for debt in February 1754
and did not attend thereafter). LOCAL OFFICES:
tobacco inspector, St. Paul's Parish, Queen Anne's
County, elected 1724; warden, St. Paul's Parish,
Queen Anne's County, elected 1728; register to
the vestry, St. Paul's Parish, 1729-1754; justice,
Queen Anne's County, by 1737-at least 1743
(quorum, 1739- at least 1743). WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: By 1752 the first

of several suits was brought against Wilkinson for
nonpayment of debts. The court found against
him and he was jailed in February 1754. In Sep-
tember of that year he sold all his personal prop-
erty. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 756 acres in Queen

Anne's County (inherited 350 acres from his father,
acquired 406 acres by patent and purchase). SIG-
NIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: bought 175 acres in Queen
Anne's County, 1748; sold 931 acres in Queen
Anne's County, 1740-1756. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: between June 7, 1757, and May 2, 1758,
probably in Queen Anne's County. Wilkinson left
no estate. All property, both real and personal,
had been sold to pay his debts.

WILKINSON, WILLIAM (?-1726). IMMIGRATED:
by 1696. RESIDED, in Charles County. MARRIED
possibly Rebecca (last name unknown). CHIL-
DREN. SON: Francis (?-1725), who married Ann
(1694-1759), daughter of Walter Smith (?-1711)
and wife Rachel Hall. Ann married second, Thomas
Trueman Greenfield (1682-1733). DAUGHTER:
Sophie, who married by 1726 James Wilson. PRI-

VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS
AFFILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: origins uncertain; possibly the William
Wilkinson, or his son, who was in Albemarle,
North Carolina, by the late 1670s, sat on the
Council there, but was banished as a result of
political problems in the early 1690s; this man
had earlier slain a servant in St. Mary's County,
had a wife from Cecil County, and knew Nehe-
miah Blakiston (?-1693); in England, 1700-1701.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; owned a mill;

factor for Edward and Dudley Carleton, London
merchants; merchant. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLA-
TIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Charles County,
1708B-1711. LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Charles
County, 1699-at least 1710 (quorum, 1708-at
least 1710). WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: probably 900 acres. WEALTH AT
DEATH. DIED: will probated August 29, 1726, in
Charles County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV,
£1,197.1.11 (including 27 oz. plate, 15 slaves, and
a library of 32 books); FB, £1,144.8.5. LAND: ca.
900 acres.

WILKINSON, WILLIAM (?-1755). BORN: in
Maryland, of age in 1732; elder son. NATIVE: third
generation. RESIDED: owned plantations in Charles
and Prince George's counties, and appears to have
alternated residency between the two counties.
At the time of his death, he was living in Prince
George's County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
Francis Wilkinson (?-1725) of Calvert County, a
merchant; son of William Wilkinson (?-1726).
STEPFATHER: Thomas Trueman Greenfield (1682-
1733). MOTHER: Ann (1694-1759), daughter of
Walter Smith (?-1711). AUNTS: Eleanor Smith
(1690-1761), who married Thomas Addison (1679-
1727); Lucy Smith (1688-1770), who married
Thomas Brooke (1683-1744); and Rebecca Smith,
who married Daniel Dulany (1685-1753).
BROTHER: Francis. SISTER: Susannah (?-1774),
who married John Addison (1713-1764). STEP-
SISTER. Marianne Greenfield, who married by 1728
John Stoddert (?-1767). FIRST COUSIN: John Ad-
dison (1713-1764); Rebecca Addison, who mar-
rried first, James Bowles (?-ca. 1727/28), and sec-
ond, George Plater (1695-1755); Elinor Addison,
who married fourth, Corbin Lee (?-1774); Ann
Addison, who married William Murdock (ca. 1710-
1769); Richard Brooke (1716-1783); Eleanor
Brooke (1718-?), who married Samuel Beall (ca.
1713-ca. 1778), Daniel Dulany, Jr. (1722-1797);
Walter Dulany (?-1773); and Margaret Dulany,
who married first, Alexander Hamilton (1712-1756),
and second, William Murdock (ca. 1710-1769).
OTHER KINSHIP: after his father's death Richard
Smith served as his guardian. MARRIED Barbara
(1722- 1757), daughter of Benjamin Mackall (1675-
1761) and wife Barbara Smith (1693-1764), who
was the widow of Thomas Holdsworth (ca. 1692-
1718). Barbara was the niece of Walter Smith (ca.
1693-1748) ; John MackaU (1669-1739); and James
MackaU (1671-1717). She was the half niece of
John Rousby (1685-1744). Her brother was Ben-
jamin Mackall, Jr. (ca. 1723-1795). Her sister was
