TOLLEY, WALTER (?-1783). NATIVE: at least
third generation. RESIDED: in Middle River Lower
Hundred, Baltimore County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Thomas Tolley (?-1732).
MOTHER: Mary Freeborn (?-1733). BROTHERS:
Thomas (?-1734); James (?-1744). SISTERS: Mary;
Elizabeth. MARRIED first, in 1735, Mary Garrett-
son (1715-1749). MARRIED second, in 1751, Mar-
tha (1720-1801), daughter of Edward Hall (1697-
1738), a justice in Baltimore County from 1721-
1732, and wife Avarilla Carvile. Martha was the
granddaughter of John Hall (ca. 1658-1737) and
John Carvile (ca. 1670-1709). She was the niece
of John Hall (1701-1774). Her brother was John
Hall (1718-1799), of "Cranberry." Her first cousins
were Blanche Hall, who married John Beale How-
ard (by 1739-1799); Sophia White (?-1780), who
married Aquila Hall (1727-1779); and Aquila Hall
(1727-1779). CHILDREN. SONS: Thomas (1738-
1743); Walter Tolley (1744-1776); James (1746-
1768), a student-at-law; Thomas Garrettson (1748-
?); and Edward Carvil (1753-ca. 1796), who
married first, Cordelia Hall (1758-1783), and
second, in 1784, Elizabeth Worthington (1763-
1785), daughter of John Worthington and wife
Mary Todd. DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth (1736-1785),
who married in 1756 George Gouldsmith Pres-
bury (1737-1823); Mary (1740-1777), who mar-
ried in 1759 Samuel Worthington (1734-1815);
Sophia (1742-?), who married in 1764 William
Allender (?-1796); Martha (1755-1755); Martha
(1758-?); and Ann (1756-1830), who married
Aquila Hall (?-1815). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCA-
TION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican,
St. John's Parish, Baltimore County. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., by 1752. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Baltimore County,
1751 (elected to the 3rd session of the 1749-1751
Assembly to fill vacancy, but did not attend; dis-
charged on June 1, 1751, for serving as a tobacco
inspector), 1754-1757; 5th Convention, Balti-
more County, 1775 (elected, but did not attend).

more County, 1736-1739, 1744-1747, 1749-1752,

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-

inherited from father and brothers, 886 acres
through patent and purchase). SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND

DEATH: acquired 1,556 acres in Baltimore and
Harford counties (including 580 acres inherited
by his wife Martha; Tolley controlled this prop-
erty but was not able to sell it because it was
entailed to his wife's heirs), 1751-1782; sold at

consolidated several smaller tracts into one large
