County; acquired one-half interest in 596 acres
in Talbot County by 1766; patented 34 acres in
Queen Anne's County, 1771; gave 3,332 acres in
Queen Anne's and Kent counties to his son Ed-
ward and 326 acres recently purchased in Queen
Anne's County to his daughter Anna, 1774; pur-
chased 150 acres of confiscated British property
in Queen Anne's County, 1782; acquired 672 acres
in Kent County and 541 acres in Queen Anne'
County by 1783; gave 200 acres in Queen Anne's
County to his daughter Mary, 1785; had con-
tracted to buy an unspecified amount of land in
Queen Anne's County shortly before his death.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on October 9, 1785, in
Queen Anne's County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: size
of estate unknown. LAND: probably ca. 6,765 acres
in Queen Anne's, Dorchester, Caroline, and Kent
counties, plus one-half interest in 596 acres in
Talbot County and possibly 1 lot in Ogletown.

TILGHMAN, JAMES (1716-1793). BORN: on
December 6, 1716, at the "Hermitage," Queen
Anne's County; fifth son. NATIVE: third genera-
tion. RESIDED: in Talbot County by 1743; Phila-
delphia by May 1764; Chestertown, Kent County,
ca. 1777-death. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER.
Richard Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39). MOTHER:
Anna Maria (1677-1748), daughter of Philemon
Lloyd (1646-1685). UNCLES. Edward Lloyd (1670-
1718/19); Philemon Lloyd (ca. 1674-1732/33); and
James Lloyd (1679/80-1723). AUNTS: Rebecca
Tilghman (?-1725), who married Simon Wilmer
(ca. 1656-1699); Margaret Lloyd (1683-1747),
who married Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca. 1676-
1741). BROTHERS: Philemon (1704-died young);
Richard (1705-1766); William Tilghman (1711-
1782); Edward Tilghman (1713-1785); and Mat-
thew Tilghman (1717/18-1790). SISTERS: Mary
(1702-ca. 1736), who married James Earle, Jr.
(ca. 1694-1739); Henrietta Maria (1707-1771),
who married first, George Robins (1697-1742),
and second, William Goldsborough (1709-1760);
and Anna Maria (1709-1763), who married first,
William H ems ley (1703-1736), and second, Robert
Lloyd (ca. 1712-1770). FIRST COUSINS: Matthew
Tilghman Ward (ca. 1676-1741); Lambert Wilmer
(1682-1732); Simon Wilmer (1686-1737); Ed-
ward Lloyd (l711-1770): Richard Lloyd (ca. 1717-
1786); Dorothy Blake, who married Charles Car-
roll (1691-1755); Henrietta Maria Lloyd (?-1766),
who married second, Daniel Dulany (1685-1753);
Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-1770); Henrietta Maria
Lloyd (ca. 1711-1748), who married Samuel

Chamberlaine (1698-1773); Margaret Lloyd (1714-
ca. 1785), who married William Tilghman (1711-
1782); and Anne Lloyd (ca. 1723-1794), who
married Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-1790).
NEPHEWS: Michael Earle (1722-1787); Richard
Tilghman Earle (1728/29-1788); Peregrine Tilgh-
man (ca. 1741-1807); James Tilghman (1743-
1809); William Hemsley (1736/37-1812); Richard
Tilghman , Jr. (1740-1809); and Matthew Tilgh-
man (1760-1801). NIECES: Anna Maria Earle
(1725-1795), who married Thomas Ringgold (1715-
1772); Henrietta Maria Earle (1730-1767), who
married William Hemsley (1736/37-1812); Anna
Maria Robins (1732-1806), who married Henry
Hollyday (ca. 1725-1789); Margaret Robins (1734-
1808), who married William Hayward (?-1791);
Henrietta Maria Robins (1736-1791), who mar-
ried James Lloyd Chamberlaine (1732-1783);
Deborah Lloyd (?-1810), who married Peregrine
Tilghman (ca. 1741-1807); and Margaret Tilgh-
man (1742-1817), who married Charles Carroll,
Barrister (1723-1783). MARRIED shortly before
November 2, 1743, Ann (1727-?), daughter of
Tench Francis (1701-1758) and wife Elizabeth
(ca. 1708-?). Ann was the granddaughter of Fos-
ter Turbutt (1679-1720/21). She was the niece of
Richard Francis (?-?); Sarah Turbutt (1706-1773),
who married Nicholas Goldsborough (ca. 1689-
1766); and Anne Turbutt (1715-1766), who mar-
ried John Goldsborough (1711-1778). Her broth-
ers were John (ca. 1725-?); Tench (1731-1800);
Turbutt (1740-1797); and Philip (1748-?). Her
sisters were Mary (1729-?); Elizabeth (1733-
1800); Margaret (1735-1794); and Rachel (1737-
?). Her first cousins were H owes Goldsborough
(1747-1797); William Goldsborough (1750/51-
1801); Thomas Goldsborough (ca. 1728-1793);
Elizabeth Goldsborough (1735-ca. 1786), who
married second, Benson Stainton (?-1781); Mary
Goldsborough (1755-1796), who married first,
Benedict Brice (1749-1786); and Ann Goldsbor-
ough (1732-?), who married Edward Oldham
(1709-1773). CHILDREN. SONS: Tench (1744-1786),
who married his first cousin Anna Maria (1755-
1843), daughter of Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-
1790); Richard (1746-1796), who attended Eton
and Middle Temple, returned to England before
the Revolution, and later traveled between Eng-
land and India during the 1780s; James Tilghman,
Jr. (ca. 1748-1796); William Tilghman (1756-
1827); Philemon (1760-1797), an officer in the
British Navy during the Revolution who returned
to Maryland after the war; and Thomas Ringgold
(1765-1789). DAUGHTERS: Anna Maria (?-1817),
