BOR BIOGRAPHIES

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION Anglican; his grandfa-
ther, father, and brother were Anglican clergymen.
SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: he visited En-
gland on several occasions, most importantly in
1715, he was a close ally of Gov. John Hart, who
bestowed considerable patronage on him; he was a
patron of the poet Ebenezer Cooke, who wrote
"An Elegy on the Death of Thomas Bordley,
Esq." OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: placeman, by
1703-1721; became a leading lawyer in the colony,
admitted to the following courts: Provincial Court
in 1704; Anne Arundel County Court in 1709;
Court of Chancery by 1712; Prince George's
County Court in 1712. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLA-
TIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Annapolis, 1708B-
1711 (Accounts 2-4), Anne Arundel County, 1715
(Laws), Annapolis, 1716-1718 (Laws 1-3), 1719
(Laws 1; appointed to Council between the 1st
and 2nd sessions); Upper House, 1720-1721 (ap-
pointed by the 2nd session; discharged by the 5th
session); Lower House, Anne Arundel County,
1722-1724 (Laws 1; Aggrievances 3); 1725-1726
(Laws 1-3: Aggrievances 1-3; died before the 4th
session). OTHER PROVINCIAL OFFICES clerk, Sec-
retary's Office and Provincial Court, 1703-1707;
clerk, Committees of the Lower House, 1704,
1706, 1714; clerk, Prerogative Office, 1708-1712;
surveyor general, Western Shore, 1717-1718; at-
torney general, 1718-1721; commissary general,
1718-1721; Council, April 1720-September 1721.
LOCAL OFFICES: clerk, Anne Arundel County,
1703-1708; St. Anne's Parish Vestry, Anne Arun-
del County, 1712-1715, 1718-1722; recorder, An-
napolis, 1721-1726. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE
ISSUES: acquitted in 1704 by the Lower House of a
charge of contempt for his refusal while clerk of
Anne Arundel County to release the county's
book of laws; removed from the Anne Arundel
County clerkship in 1708 by Philemon Lloyd (ca.
1674-1732/33), for which Bordley went to court
in an attempt to regain the office; he became a
leader of the popular or "country" party against
the proprietary interests in the early 1720s; he in-
curred the anger of Charles Calvert in 1721, which
brought his dismissal from the Council; he es-
poused publicizing the action of the Assembly by
printing the legislative proceedings; he edited The
Charter of Maryland. Together with the Debates
and Proceedings of the..... Assembly..... 1722, 1723,
1724 (Philadelphia, 1725), and was instrumental in
bringing the printer William Parks to Annapolis in

1726. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT

FIRST ELECTION at least 500 acres. WEALTH AT
DEATH. DIED on October 11, 1726, in England.

BOREMAN (BOARMAN), WILLIAM (ca.

1630-1709). BORN: probably in England. IMMI-
GRATED: by 1645 as a free adult. RESIDED: in St.
Mary's County. MARRIED first, by 1651 Sarah (?-
ca. 1669). MARRIED second, Mary, daughter of
Thomas Mathews (ca. 1622-1675/76). MARRIED
third, Mary, daughter of John Jarbo (1619-
1674/75). She subsequently married by 1712 John
Sanders. CHILDREN. SONS: William, Jr. (1654-
1720), a justice of St. Mary's County from 1679 to
1689, who married first, Jane, daughter of James
Neale (ca. 1615-1684), and second, Mary, daugh-
ter of Joseph Pile (?-1692); Francis Ignatius; John
Baptiste (1687-?), who married Elizabeth Edelen;
and Benedict Leonard (1687-?), who married
Ann. DAUGHTERS: Mary, who married first, John
Gardiner, son of Luke Gardiner( 1622- 1674), and
second, Gerard Slye (1654-by 1703), son of Robert
Slye (ca. 1628-1670/71); Anne, who married
Leonard Brooke (?-1718), son of Baker Brooke
(1628-1678/79); Elizabeth, who married (first
name unknown) Hammersly; Clare, who married
first, Richard Brooke, and second, Richard Shir-
bin; Mary, who married Robert Greene, son of
Thomas Greene (?-ca. 1651/52); and Sarah, who
married first, Thomas Mathews (?-1676/77), son
of Thomas Mathews (ca. 1622-1675/76), and sec-
ond, Thomas Mudd. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCA-
TION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Catholic.

SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: low Status On

arrival; no land until the late 1650s; Gent., by
1665. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE, a mariner in the
1640s; planter; Indian trader; land speculator.

PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower

House, St. Mary's County, 1671-1674/75 (Laws
4). LOCAL OFFICES: justice, St. Mary's County,
1663/64-1664, 1666-1668, 1675/76-1679 (quo-
rum, 1675/76-1679); coroner, St. Mary's County,
1671; sheriff, St. Mary's County, 1679-1683. MILI-
TARY SERVICE: captain, 1661; major, by 1676.
STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: closely allied
with the Cal verts; fined 1,000 pounds of tobacco
in 1 656 for supporting the Calverts at the Battle of
the Severn; rewarded for his support with exten-
sive patronage in the 1660s. WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca. 3,000

acres, 1671; 5,117 acres by 1673; 6,050 acres by

1675. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: by July 11, 1709.
