BOTELER (BUTLER), JOHN (ca. 1601-1642)
BORN: ca. 1601, probably in Kent, England. IMMI-
GRATED: in 1635 as a free adult. RESIDED: on Kent
Island. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: John Bo-
teler, of Roswell, Essex, England. MOTHER. Jane
Elliott. UNCLE: Capt. Nathaniel Boteler, governor
of Bermuda and of Providence Island. BROTHER:
Thomas Boteler, who married Joan Mountste-
phen. SISTER: Elizabeth (ca. 1611-after 1668), who
married in 1635 William Claiborne (1600-ca.

1677). PRIVATE CAREER. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION:

probably a Protestant. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Assembly, special writ, 1638/39 (apparently never
attended). LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Kent County,
1639/40. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, 1638.

STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: he was a

leader of Claiborne's forces on Kent Island, 1638;
he was captured by Leonard Cal vert's men, and
was later urged by Calvert to join the proprietary
party. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: surveyed 200 acres, 1640.

WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED. ca. April 1642; size of

estate unknown.

BOUGHTON, RICHARD (?-1706) IMMI
GRATED: in 1666 as a free adult, possibly from
Virginia. RESIDED: in Nanjemoy, Charles County.
FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: possibly either
Thomas Boughton, armiger of Bilton, Warwick-
shire, England, who attended Gray's Inn in
1647/48, or Richard Boughton, of Lewes, Sussex,
England. UNCLE. William Stone (ca. 1603-ca.
1659/60). MARRIED first, in 1667 Verlinda (?-by
1694), widow of Thomas Burdett; daughter of
Rev. William Cotton, of Lower Accomack
County, Virginia. MARRIED second, by March
1694 Honor. CHILDREN. SON. Samuel. DAUGH-
TERS: Katherine; Verlinda; and Mary. PRIVATE
CAREER. EDUCATION: literate; had clerical skills;
may have attended Gray's Inn or Lincoln's Inn.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STA-

TUS AND ACTIVITIES: may have been distantly
related to the proprietary family; early preferment
seems to have come from his education and family
connections, but he failed to maintain his position;
Gent., 1666/67; accused of dishonesty and tempo-
rarily lost his positions in 1669. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: placeman; attorney, admitted to the fol-
lowing courts: Provincial Court in 1666/67;
Charles County in 1670. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Charles County,
1669 (Aggrievances). OTHER PROVINCIAL OF-
FICES: Council, 1666-1666/67; justice, Provincial
Court, 1666; secretary and judge of Probate, 1666-

1667; clerk, Upper House, 1674-1676. LOCAL OF-
FICES: clerk, Charles County, 1667-1669, 1682-
1689/90, Anne Arundel County, 1674-1682; reg-
istrar, Nanjemoy Parish, Charles County, 1700;
deputy commissary, Charles County, 1704.

STANDS ON PUBLIC/ PRI VATE ISSUES: Opposition tO

the revolution of 1689 brought his dismissal from
the Charles County clerkship and virtually termi-
nated his political career. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. ANNUAL INCOME: in February 1670/71 he
was in debtor's prison. His debts included money
owed for drinks consumed at his first wedding.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: no evidence of land-
ownership while a burgess or councilor. SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH, patented 950 acres in 1679, but
he sold it in 1684; acquired 100 acres in 1684,
which he sold in 1690; took a 2 -year lease on 400
acres in 1684. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: in 1706.
PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £16.4.4 sterling, plus
1 ,420 pounds of tobacco.

BOWIE, ALLEN, JR. (1737-1803). BORN: in
1737 in Prince George's County; probably eldest
son. NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED: at the
"Hermitage," Lower District, Frederick County
(later became part of Montgomery County). FAM-
ILY BACKGROUND. FATHER John Bowie, Jr.
(1708-1753), of "Thorpeland," Prince George's
County; son of John, the immigrant. STEPFATHER.
Thomas Cramphin (?-1783). MOTHER: Elizabeth
Pottinger (?-by 1777). UNCLE: William Bowie
(1721-1791). BROTHERS: James; Rev. John (1744-
?), who married Margaret Dallas. HALF BROTH-
ERS: William Bowie, Jr., who married Rachel Pot-
tinger; Robert Cramphin; Basil Cramphin; and
Richard Cramphin (1760-?). STEPBROTHER
Thomas Cramphin, Jr. (ca. 1740-ca. 1831). HALF
SISTER: Mary Bowie, who married James Ma-
gruder. STEPSISTER: Ruth Cramphin (1742-1812).
FIRST COUSINS: Walter Bowie (1748-1810); Robert
Bowie (ca. 1750-1818); and Fielder Bowie (ca.
1745-1794). ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Bowie's
father John had previously married Mary (?-by
1735), daughter of William Offet and wife Mary.
MARRIED in 1766 his stepsister Ruth (1742-1812),
daughter of Thomas Cramphin (?-1783) and wife
Mary Jackson. Her brother was Thomas Cram-
phin, Jr. (ca. 1740-ca. 1831). CHILDREN. SONS:
Thomas (1767-?), of Bladensburg, Prince George's
County; John (?-1825), who inherited the "Her-
mitage," his father's dwelling plantation, and who
served as a physician in the War of 1812, he never
married; Washington (1776-1826), a godson of
George Washington (1731/32-1799) and a mer-
