serving as attorney general and naval officer of the
Port of Annapolis since the close of the 4th ses-
sion); Upper House, 1759-1761 (appointed before
the 2nd convention), 1762-1763. OTHER PROVIN-
CIAL OFFICES: naval officer, Annapolis, 1755-
1762; attorney general, 1756-1763; Council, 1759-
1764 (appointed and qualified on April 4, 1759);
commissary general, 1762-1764. LOCAL OFFICES:
churchwarden, St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel
County, elected April 1734 (left province by Au-
gust 1734); St. Anne's Parish Vestry, Anne Arun-
del County, 1742-1745; common councilman, An-
napolis, 1754-1755, 1757-1760; alderman,
Annapolis, 1760-1763; mayor, Annapolis, 1761
(elected to fill vacancy), 1764. WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 1,710 acres
in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, includ-
ing lots in Annapolis (the remainder of 1,810 acres
and lots inherited from his father). SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION
AND DEATH: controlled 1 lot in Annapolis for his
sister Elizabeth by 1753; sold 1,340 acres in Anne
Arundel County, 1759; administered 2,057 acres
in Kent County, which his brother John left to his
half brother John Beale Bordley (1726/27-1804)
between 1762 and 1764. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: on Thursday evening, December 6, 1764, at
his home in Annapolis; in the summer of 1763 he
had suffered a stroke, and by the fall of 1764 he
was virtually an invalid. PERSONAL PROPERTY:
requested no appraisal of his estate; in his will, he
mentioned that his debts were small and few; had
an extensive library of law and miscellaneous ti-
tles. LAND: 370 acres in Annapolis and Anne
Arundel County, including lots in Annapolis.

BORDLEY, STEPHEN (ca. 1734-1771). BORN
ca. 1734 in St. Paul's Parish, Kent County; eldest
son. NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED: in Ches-
tertown, Kent County. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: Thomas Bordley (?-1752), of Kent
County; son of immigrant, Rev. Stephen Bordley,
of Kent County. MOTHER: Ann Miller. BROTHERS
William (1741-?); Arthur (1743-?); and Thomas
(?-1749). SISTERS. Sarah; Mary (1746-?). OTHER
KINSHIP: his great-uncle was Thomas Bordley (ca.
1683-1726); his second cousins were Stephen
Bordley (ca. 1710-1764) and John Beale Bordley
(1726/27-1804). MARRIED by 1768 possibly Han-
nah, daughter of Thomas Bowers, yeoman, of
Kent County. CHILDREN. Probably died without
progeny. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: trained as
a lawyer. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican,
Chester Parish, Kent County. SOCIAL STATUS

AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., 1764. OCCUPATIONAL

PROFILE: lawyer, admitted to the following courts:
Annapolis Mayor's Court in 1753; Provincial
Court in October 1756; Queen Anne's County in
November 1757; Kent County by March 1759;
Cecil County by June 1760. PUBLIC CAREER. LEG-
ISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Kent County,
1768-1770 (Grievances 1-3; Public Offices 1; Elec-
tions 3), 1771 (elected, but died before attending).
LOCAL OFFICE: clerk of Indictments, Cecil
County, in office 1760. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 1,305 acres in
Kent County. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND

BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: disposed
of interest in 1,134 acres and purchased an addi-
tional 229 acres in Kent County, plus 1.5 lots in
Chestertown, Kent County. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: administration bond filed on September 20,
1771, in Kent County. PERSONAL PROPERTY:
TEV, £830.1.7 current money (including 7 slaves
and 56 books); FB, £357.13.7. LAND: probably ca.
400 acres in Kent County, plus 1.5 lots in Chester-
town, Kent County.

BORDLEY, THOMAS (ca 1683-1726) BORN
ca. 1683 in Yorkshire, England; youngest son. IM-
MIGRATED: in 1694 as a minor with his brother
from England. RESIDED: in Kent County; Annapo-
lis, Anne Arundel County, by 1704. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER: Rev. Stephen Bordley,
who received an M.A. from Cambridge University
in 1689; prebendary of St. Paul's, London, En-
gland. BROTHER: Rev. Stephen Bordley (ca. 1675-
1709), a rector in Maryland from 1694 to 1709,
who married Anne, daughter of John Hynson (?-
1705). SISTERS Mary; Elizabeth. MARRIED first, in
December 1708 Rachel (?-1722), daughter of
Richard Beard (ca. 1648-1703), of Annapolis.
MARRIED second, in September 1723 Ariana
(1690-1741), who died in England after a small-
pox inoculation, widow of James Frisby (1684-
1719); daughter of Matthias Vanderheyden (?-
1729). She subsequently married Edmund Jen-
nings (?-1756). Her half brother was Henry Ward
(?-1734). Her sisters were Jane; Francina; and
Augustina, who married James Harris (1682-
1743). CHILDREN. SONS: Stephen Bordley (ca.
1710-1764); William (1714-1762), of Cecil
County, who married (first name unknown)
Pearce; John; Thomas; Mathias: and John Beale
Bordley (1726/27-1804), who married first, ca.
1750 Margaret (?-1773), daughter of Samuel
Chew, and second, in 1776 Sarah Mifflin, of Phila-
delphia. DAUGHTER Elizabeth. PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate; studied law in Annapolis.
