LAWS OF MARYLAND.

first term of said Circuit Court held in said
county; if any one or all of such defendants
shall elect to be tried before said Justice of
the Peace, the Justice shall proceed to docket
the case in usual form and hear and decide
the case.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That the master of
said boat shall have painted in black figures
on two sets of white canvass, the numbers cor-
responding to the license to catch oysters, each
figure shall be ten or more inches long and of
proportionate width, and at least four inches

firmly sewed upon the starboard side and near
the middle of that part of the mainsail which
is above close-reef, and the other number on
the port side and near the middle of the jib,
above the bonnet and reef; these numbers
shall be placed in an upright position and
worn at all time during the dredging season,
and shall not be concealed or defaced, and no
other number shall be used or exposed to view
except the true number on said license; and
any person or persons who shall violate the
provisions of this section shall be deemed
guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction
before any Justice of the Peace in the county,
or Judge of the Circuit Court, shall be fined
not less than twenty-five dollars nor more
than fifty dollars, and stand committed until
cost and fines are paid; and all fines arising

by the defendant or defendants to the Jus-
tice of the Peace trying said case, or to the
the Sheriff or his Deputy, of said county,
and by them to be paid into the Public School
fund of said county, and a failure by the said
Justice, Sheriff or his Deputy to pay said fine
within thirty days after receipt of the same to
the said Public School fund, shall be deemed
a misdemeanor, and shall subject said Justice,
Sheriff or Deputy to a fine double the amount
received by them, to be recovered by indict-
ment or suit.
