CHAPTER 9.

AN ACT to incorporate the Joint Stock company
of Mount Washington Female College of the Me-
thodist Episcopal Church.

Passed Jan.
27, 1866.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That Levi Perry, George Appold,
John M. Frazier. J. W. Hedges, Joseph France,
Henry W. Drakely, J. J. Moran, W. T. R. Saf-
fell, and William F. Speake, be and they are hereby
incorporated and made a body politic by the name
of the Joint Stock Company of Mount Washington
Female College of the Methodist Episcopal Church
with a view to Literary and Educational purposes,
and by that name shall have perpetual succession
with power to provide for the naming and election
of any, and all such officers as may be desired by
said corporation, to make and amend a constitu-
tion and by-laws for their government, not incon-
sistent with the laws of this State or of the United
States, to have and to use a common seal with the
privilege of altering the same at pleasure, to
make provision for the conferring of degrees and
awarding of diplomas, as fully and to the same
extent as such powers are now exercised or enjoyed
by any of the colleges in the said State of Maryland,
to purchase, take and hold by deed or otherwise,
any property, real, personal or mixed, and the
same or any part thereof, to dispose of at pleasure,
and to execute such deed or deeds or other convey-
ances as may be necessary therefor, to sue and be
sued, plead and he impleaded, and generally to
have, use and exercise all and singular the powers
of a corporation to such extent as may be necessary
for the purpose of effectually carrying into effect
the purposes aforesaid; but nothing herein con-
tained shall be so construed as to confer any bank-
ing privileges upon the said corporation, or any
authority to issue any note, certificate, device or

all times two-thirds of the directors of said corpor-
ation shall be members of the Methodist Episco-
pal church; and provided further, that no person
at any time shall be President or Principal of said
college unless he be a member of the Methodist
Episcopal church.
