Sec. 3. Se it enacted, That the said county com-
missioners of Cecil county are hereby authorized,
if in their discretion they deem it proper, to sell
and convey the present jail property in the town
of Elkton, and to purchase other lands for the use
of said county, on which to build a new jail and
the necessary out buildings.

Sec. 4. And be it enacted, That this act shall
take effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 70.

 

AN ACT to authorize the several Coal and Iron
Companies of Allegany county to furnish aid to
the Western Maryland Railroad Company, for
the construction of its road between Hagerstown
and Cumberland.

Passed Feb.
8, 1866.

SECTION. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the several Coal and Iron Com-
panies of Allegany county, chartered by this State,
shall be, and they are hereby respectively author-
ized and empowered to subscribe to the capital
stock of the Western Maryland Railroad Company,
or to endorse the bonds of the said company, or to
loan the said railroad company an amount, in the
aggregate of one million five hundred thousand
dollars, the amount to be subscribed, or endorsed,
or loaned by each of said companies to be deter-
mined by and for itself; the amount so advanced or
subscribed to be applied towards the construction of
the said road between Hagerstown and Cumber-
land.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the said West-
ern Maryland Railroad Company shall be, and it is
hereby authorized to secure to the said companies,
to each, for the amount advanced by it, otherwise
than by a subscription to its stock, by the execu-
