Chapter 476.

 

AN ACT to provide for the levy for the present

 

year by the County Commissioners of Calvert

 

county, and to make further provision to supply

 

the assessment lists recently destroyed by the

 

burning of the court house, and for the correc-

 

tion of the same, and for additions thereto.

 

WHEREAS by the destruction by fire of the court

 

house in Prince Frederick, Calvert county, on the

 

third day of March, 1882, the greater portion of

Preamble.

the books and papers belonging to the office of

 

the county commissioners of Calvert county, in-

 

cluding the assessment books, were consumed;

 

therefore, to supply the loss thereof —

 

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly

 

of Maryland, That the county commissioners of

 

Calvert county be and they are hereby authorized

 

and empowered to make out in a suitable book or

 

books, to be provided for the purpose, a new list

from the rough books and lists made out by the

 

assessors at the last assessment of property in the

 

said county under the general law for that pur-

 

pose, from the tax lists furnished the collectors of

payers and from any other data accessible to

 

them, or by taking proof by deposition upon oath

 

which they are hereby authorized to do by writs

 

directed to the sheriff or any constable of the said

 

county, or by any other mode of gaining informa-

 

tion which they may deem more convenient or

 

expedient to effectuate the purpose; using for that

 

end any of the powers given by the Code of Pub-
