AN ACT to pay the claim of William Knabe &

Company due by the State,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
|
 
|
bly of Maryland, That the Comptroller of the
|
 
|
State be and he is hereby directed to draw his war-

Chapter 120
|
 
|
AN ACT to inflict Corporal Punishment upon Per-
|
 
|
sons found guilty of Wife-beating.
|
 
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
|
 
|
bly of Maryland, That article thirty of the Code
|
 
|
of Public General Laws of tins State, title " Crimes
|

and Punishments," be and the same is hereby

amended by adding thereto the following additional
|
 
|
section, under the sub-title of " Wife-beating."
|
 
|
SECTION .... Any person who shall hereafter bru-
|
 
|
tally assault and beat his wife, shall be deemed guilty
|
 
|
of a misdemeanor, and upon presentment and con-
|

viction thereof by any court of competent jurisdic-
tion, shall be sentenced to be whipped not exceed-
|
 
|
ing forty lashes, or imprisoned for a term not
|
 
|
exceeding one year, or both, in the discretion of the

court.

SEC. .... And be it enacted, That if any court
|
 
|
shall order or direct the punishment as aforesaid by
|
