timore city, and that said Committee shall report in the
premises within fourteen days.

Mr. Humphreys submitted the following message :

BY THE SENATE,

January 19th, 1876.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

We propose, with the concurrence of your Honorable Body,
the appointment of a Joint Special Committee of five, two
on the part of the Senate and three on the part of the House,
to visit the House of Refuge, Maryland Penitentiary and
the Hospital for the Insane, at Spring Grove, and to examine
into their condition, the manner in which they are conducted,
and to report to the two Houses.

Secretary.

Which was read, assented to. and sent to the House of
Delegates.

Mr. Gorman submitted the following message :

BY THE SENATE,

January 19th, 1876.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :

We have received your message informing the Senate that
the Joint Standing Committee, appointed in conformity to
Section 24, Article 3, of the Constitution, has been instructed
by an order of your Honorable Body, to inquire as to the
alleged receipt, by the State Treasurer, of interest or other
consideration from banks or other associations for placing the
State's money on deposit therein, and that you have in-
structed the said Committee to proceed at once with said in-
quiry, and to sit during the sitting of either or both Houses
of the General Assembly, and that the said Committee re-
port within fourteen days, and respectfully concur therein.

AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,

Secretary.

Which was read, assented to and sent to the House of
Delegates.

At 2.30 P. M., the Senate adjourned.
