And returned,

Senate bill entitled an Act to change the dividing line be-
tween the Second and Fifth Election Districts, in (Jarrett
county.

Endorsed, "passed by yeas and nays."

The hour of 1.30, P. M., having arrived,

The Senators proceeded to the Hall of the House of Dele-
gates, to enter into Joint Convention, for the election of a
Police Commissioner, for Baltimore city.

JOINT CONVENTION.

The Senators of Maryland, accompanied by the Secretary
of the Senate, appeared in the Hall of the House of Dele-
gates.

The Speaker, as Chairman of the Joint Convention, then
announced that the Senate and House would now, in Joint
Convention, proceed to the election of a Police Commissioner
for the City of Baltimore, as agreed upon between the two
Houses, and in accordance with the provisions of the Act of
Assembly, of January Session, 1874.

The Chairman appointed Mr. Steiner, on the part of the
Senate, and Mr. Lewis, on the part of the House of Delegates,
to act as tellers.

Mr. Gill nominated James R. Herbert.

Mr. Naill nominated Wm. Louis Schley.

The Secretary of the Senate and the Clerk of the House of
Delegates called the rolls of their respective Houses, where-
upon, each Senator and Member proceeded to ballot.

Upon counting the b;illots, Mr. Steiner, upon the part of
the tellers, made the following report:
The tellers appointed, respectfully report

James R. Herbert received...........................79 votes.

Wm. Louis Schley......................................22 "

Benjamin F. Butler .................................... 2 ''

And there were blank ballots........................ 2 ''

Whole number of votes cast,................... 105

Whereupon,

It appearing that James R. Herbert had received a majority
of all the votes cast,

The Speaker declared James R. Herbert duly elected to the
office of Police Commissioner of the City of Baltimore, for
the ensuing term of six years.
