The Hon. R. C. Holliday, Secretary of State, appeared
and delivered a message from his Excellency the Governor.

On motion of Mr. Gorman,

The reading of the message was suspended, in order to
receive a message from the House of Delegates.

The Clerk of the House of Delegates delivered the follow-
ing message:

By THE HOUSE OF DELEGATE,

January 6th, 1876.
Gentlemen of the Senate :

We respectfully propose, with the concurrence of your
Honorable Body, that the Senate and House of Delegates
assemble in the Hall of the House of Delegates, at two
o'clock to-day, when the Speaker of the House of Delegates
shall preside, and in the presence of both Houses open the
returns of the election for the Governor of the State of Mary-
land, in conformity with the requirements of the Constitution
of the State,

Chief Clerk.
Mr. Gorman submitted the iollowing:

BY THE SENATE,

January 6th, 1876.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

We have received your message proposing to open the re-
turns of the election for Governor of Maryland, in the Hall
of the House of Delegates to-day at two o'clock, in the
presence of both Houses, in conformity with the requirements
of the Constitution of the State, and concur therein.

By order,

AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,

Secretary.
Pending its consideration,

Mr. Steiner submitted the following amendment :

Strikeout "concur therein" and substitute, suggest that
Tuesday, at one o'clock, P. M. would better suit the Senate,
and be in conformity with past usage as to the time for
counting the returns of the election for Governor.

Which was rejected by yeas and nays as follows :
