Said Resolution was then sent to the Senate.
Mr. Koons submitted the following order :
WHEREAS, The proper and judicious education of the people
by a system of public school instruction is one of the principal
safeguards of our liberties; therefore,
Resolved, That any system of public school instruction
which may be devised, should be by the people of the people,
and for the people, and that all the people of the State should
be allowedto participate as well in its control as in its advan-
tages and emoluments.
Which was rejected.
On motion of Mr. Waters, of Dorchester,
Ordered, That the Committee on Claims be instructed to,
insure the paintings directed to be sent to the Centennial Ex-
position against loss from fire or otherwise.
On motion of Mr. Briscoe,
Ordered, That Mr. Ward have leave of absence for a few
days, to attend the funeral of his ward.
On motion of Mr. Neal,
Leave was granted to the Queen Anne's and Talbot dele-
gations, to introduce a bill to regulate the measurement of
oysters in'Queen Anne's and Talbot counties.
